Young Corrupt and his new era
You’re reading this exactly when you should because…Young Corrupt has entered a new period of his music career and you don’t want to miss this new era! We sit with Vista, California’s upcoming artist as he speaks on what he’s been up to during the pandemic and how he’s creating his own path to success.
Abby Martinez: How did you start writing your own music?
Young Corrupt: I've been making music since I was 15. So I'm 21 now. I didn't start recording until I was 17. But after that, I've just been releasing music as much as possible. Quarantine really helped me because now I got a team and all that, and someone who produces for me.
AM: What inspires your music?
YC: When I'm making music, it all depends on how I feel at that moment. I'll get into this conscious state where it's like, I don't even know what I'm writing but it just all depends on how I feel on the beat.
AM: What does your creative process look like?
YC: The way I see it, it all depends on the beat, how it makes me feel. I have some beats where I'll write a song in 30 minutes, and then I'll have some that take me a week. But what I really do is maybe during the day I'll think of one idea, or write it down. And then later on if it really fits with the beat, just start from there and go try to write a whole verse down below.
“Tuck N Run” audio
AM: How did you go about creating your song, “Tuck N Run,” and what inspired it?
YC: Honestly, that one I was just having fun with. I was really in a conscious state where it's like, I tried to write something that's fun, people could listen to, especially with the way that the song was going. Bleverly Hills (@seeblev), he produced it. And I've really been working with that guy. He's been producing most of my new music. Most of my songs have been about relationships and I was like, I gotta change it up.
AM: How did you bring your creative team together?
YC: Most of these people I've reached out to, and they've been willing to work with me. Most of these people aren't even in the same city as me or the same state. People from different places in the world.
AM: There are artists who write in the most unconventional ways, like under a desk or in the closet. Where do you usually write your music?
YC: It's mostly just in my room. I'll just play the beat, and then sometimes I'll just have a lamp on, turn off the lights, and focus on writing.
AM: How do you deal with artist block?
YC: I've gone through that and it pisses me off so bad. I just take a break from the song and go listen to music. Or maybe I just come back to it the next day.
AM: If you had a mash up between two of your songs. Which ones would you choose?
YC: I got this song “Mase you” and I will mash it up with “Lost Faces.”
AM: What are your goals for your music?
YC: I definitely hope my music really blows up. I've even had some messages where people get inspired from listening to me, and they start trying to do music themselves. Pretty much have music that people can relate to.
AM: Do you have any future projects coming up?
YC: Already got a song that drops on September 30th. And this guy's featured, Quincy (@itzquincy), he fucking did amazing . This guy legit brings vibes. He sings the hook and it's just r&b all over that track. I already knew it was going to kill me on the track too. Once I heard I was like, all the attention is going to go to him immediately. I found him on...lately I've been using this website called soundbetter.com. It really connects me to other artists, graphic designers, mixing and mastering engineers. Definitely connects you to a lot of people.
I also have this song. I'm going to have someone featured on it from my city. And then I sent it out to Mark Battles (@markbattles317), waiting on his verse also. Bleverly Hills sent me a beat yesterday. I'm just trying to drop music, pretty much every month or maybe like every other month, just as much as possible.
