Rising Artist Donny Daydream releases song as a love letter to music

Do you know what’s the best part of getting to work with the people you support? To be able to give them opportunities that will benefit their personal and professional growth. Today I’m very honored to be the one who brings to you Donny Daydream’s first interview.

Donny was born in Hong Kong and moved to the United States at 4 years old, where he was raised by his aunt in California, and now lives in LA. Like many other artists, he discovered his love for music at a young age, Ramona, his older sister, would always sing around the house, especially songs from big vocalists such as Mariah Carey and Leona Lewis, making his intrigue towards music bigger. His fascination for it led him to start singing and this became the reason and the first step to becoming the artist he is now.

If you’re someone pursuing music as a career you know the struggles of the journey, filled with up and downs, but also great experiences that leave you with a very fulfilling sensation, and if you’re still not sure how to continue with this dream you have, here’s the sign you needed.  It was no different for Donny, singing was always very big for him but school was always the priority, intrusive thoughts such as “you can’t do music as a career” would creep in and this dream of his would always just be that, a dream at a distance.

At 18 years old, he started living by himself, got into college, and getting a job became a necessity. Balancing school and work became his full daily routine until eventually, he had to choose one thing, and he chose work, that way he could provide for himself. After a while, reality hit, and he realized this isn’t what he is supposed to be doing.

I would go to part-time jobs every day, and it would just suck! I was like, what am I even doing with my life?
— Donny on how he decided to do music for a living
When I was 18 and was doing these jobs that I hated, I decided to like... If I had to work hard at something might as well work at something that I really love
— Donny on how he started persuing music

He took a big step, trusted his gut, and worked hard for what he wanted no matter the odds and I will forever admire that about him. He is 22 years old now and putting all his energy towards this big goal, and has been killing it!

Here’s one of his latest releases and what got our team obsessed with him!

“MISSED CALLS” has been in his life for a year and holds a special place in Donny’s heart. The inspiration behind this song lays in having a complicated family and developing a strong bond with his old best friend’s late father.

Make sure to go watch the music video to get the full picture of this masterpiece.

And my personal favorite, “SUPERMODEL”, this song happened at a low point in his life, leaving him feeling a little lost and hopeless.

It’s like a love letter to music, you have to work for it, and it’s like, you don’t see the success until later on, and as much as it pains me, I can’t let go of it because I love it so much
— Donny on writing SUPERMODEL

We also talked about his creative process and how his songs come to life! In the very beginning, he used to write his melodies and lyrics first, then bring them to his producer. Or most of the time he would be in his car and come up with random stuff he would like to talk about and record it as a voice memo and build the beat around it. But recently, he noticed that because he is so used to do things like that, everything he writes sounds kinda the same, so he changed things up a bit.

I try to build the beat first and then write on top of it, so it’s not just a melody from my head, it’s like, I hear something, and I react to it!
— Donny on changing his songwriting process

One of the best pieces of advice you’ll get from us is to surround yourself with people who match your energy, in any aspect of your life! By doing this you’ll be happy with whatever you create together and will be able to find creative solutions to any problem you might face in the process. I was so glad to hear Donny is doing just that. I’d like to make a special mention to his friends, Stephen and Brian who happen to be the ones who help him convert his art into something bigger visually. And also his manager Dylan, for pushing him out of his comfort zone in the best way possible, and helping him become the big artist he’s meant to be.

I also wanted to know more about what this new chapter as a new artist has been like for him, and his answer couldn’t have been more perfect and pure.

Very steady and trying to grow organically. I’ve been trying to grow an audience and fans, I want to build something instead of trying to just have one hit song! I really want to build my legacy, my career. So it’s been very progressive
— Donny on his experience as a rising artist

To conclude this interview, I asked Donny if he had any advice for the people who have the same dream as him, and this is something we all need to hear.

Don’t stop. With anything in life, if you work hard enough, it will happen. So don’t stop and have no regrets because once you stop you’re back to square one. If you really love it and want it, just go for it!
— Donny on advice for our community

I guess all I’m left to say now is, Donny Daydream, remember that name!
