This has to be your second favorite boy band!-PSN
Is this all-boy band reviving the 2010s Tumblr boy band era or the 1980s college-rock era? They definitely bring out the inner fangirl that everyone needs.
After this article, you will definitely be blasting Post Sex Nachos' newest album, “Your Second Favorite Boy Band”.
Back in the day, we used to go on Tumblr and be so overdramatic and proud to wear our band tees thinking that we were doing something inspiring. Some of you will never know what life was like being a teen during those times. The band that thrived during this era was the Arctic Monkeys, but I don’t think Post Sex Nachos (PSN) is a part of this cult phenomenon.
They are College Rock!
College-Rock Genre?
This was a term that started in the 80s with bands gaining popularity because they were played on campus’ college rock radio. Or, another term for ”College-Rock” would also be a group of students who formed a band in hopes of becoming a rockstar. This term contradicts itself because the point of college rock is that these bands were underground until they became a part of the mainstream since they gained popularity on college campuses. A notorious name that is considered college rock is R.E.M. (University of Georgia). I don’t know about you, but I think that Post Sex Nachos have the potential to achieve this height.
Fun Fact: The College-Rock term was popular until the mid-1990s when terms like alternative and indie were rising. These genres were all coined together, but nowadays we just say alt. music.
PSN is a “college” rock band with five members. Mitch Broddon-guitarist, Sammy Elfanbaum-lead vocals/guitar, Hunter Pendleton-drummer, and Chase Mueller- bassist. Recently, they have added their fifth member, Kevin Jerez, a keyboardist.
Post Sex Nachos has brought a new meaning to college-rock bands in this day and age, with their increased popularity at the University of Missouri. Four out of the five band members attended the University of Missouri for their undergrad, so who said you can’t be talented and smart! The midwest doesn’t seem like the place where a band can thrive, but they have unlocked something amazing and have brought a community of music lovers in the midwest to have a new favorite band to follow.
Here are a few reasons why PSN should be your favorite boy band:
They are going on tour, and they are even better LIVE!
Their energy is infectious
Mitch is getting his doctorate, which means he’ll be Dr. Mitch and Hunter is in grad school!
Sam is not only the frontman of the band, but he also designs all the cover art and promotional graphics
Chase has a nacho chip tattoo
Kevin is the reason the band exists today!
“Your Second Favorite Boy Band” behind the album:
“[The album] satire on morality, basically. So, there are a lot of dark themes, but making light out of them. The first verse [of “We’re All Dying”, ”Want Some Juice?”] is basically like, when do I kill myself? And then the second verse is like, this is why I don't like the world, but then it all comes together. And makes like this joyous celebration.”
“We’re All Dying”, ”Want Some Juice?” was the last song written for the album. Sam talks about how this song came to be on the album and the process behind writing it. “I was scrambling to get a 12th song on the record. All the boys had work and I took off work to finish the album. Every day I was like, throwing things at Mitch when he would get home I'd be like, is this worth it. he said yeah. Maybe or not, but this sounds honest. He was like, yeah, no, that's cool. I mean, it's kind of out of our realm, but it's cool. Yeah, that was one of the ones where I was like, this doesn't really sound like us, but we could make it fit our genre more and now it does. No, it does. And now it is us. Yeah, and now we're punk rock.”
Sam mentions that the cover has been made since their album “Grandpa's Slinks” came out, and at that time there were only four members. With that being said, you only see three hands and a leg which represent all the members in the band, minus Kevin:’/ The passport on the cover art refers to all the touring that they have been doing.
And if you are curious, which you probably aren’t. My top four favorite songs off of their newest album are “We’re All Dying”, ”Want Some Juice?”, ”Midwest Daze”, and ”I Got This Feeling That Won’t Let Go!”.
Post Sex Nachos has revived college rock and I am not mad about it! I had the chance to see them live for the second time and they did not disappoint. It is such a different experience when you get to see artists progress from a small club to an actual venue. If you are in Nashville tonight, then you should go see them at The Basement. Keep an eye out for more tour dates!
