Get to Know: Mobius
Marcos aka Mobius is a guitarist, songwriter and producer whose melodies instill a sense of peace and wonder within. Based in LA, Mobius has always been driven by the need to express ideas that words can’t. His ability to effortlessly interweave soul, jazz and rock creates a sound that is uniquely his.
Mobius describes his music as: A blend of jazz, hip hop, electronic, and psychedelic soul music to vibe out to. Guitar, Bass, Samples, Keys, and more carefully crafted for your listening pleasure.
Gulie Carrington: Tell me about your journey, your creative process and how it has changed from when you were first getting started to now.
Mobius: I guess I had different phases. I started out like a lot of other producers, remembering back in early high school using Fruity Loops Studio, then toward my junior year of high school, my friend was learning how to play the guitar and prior to this, I wasn’t interested in learning, but I did learn the basics from him which piqued my interest. A couple months later, I ended up getting my own guitar and from there, my mind kind of changed into wanting to learn how to record myself and practice. I didn’t really have many friends who were considering a career in music at the time, so I didn’t have many people to collaborate with. That was a lot of my earlier process; learning how to record to entertain myself but also, to better myself.
Around 2011/2012, I took a course on Electronic music production and competition, and that is where I learned Ableton. After this, considering the fact that I also studied IT in school, it became a synthesis of music and technology that has escalated in the last 10 years.
GC: I haven’t heard many producers say that they had an interest in technology prior to producing, that is super dope and unique!
Mobius: Learning how to use DSPs, not even on the technical level, but on the music industry side and how that all works is something i’m still figuring out, it’s kind of uncharted territory.
GC: It’ll come in time!
I want to ask you this as a creative- when you create, what does your environment look like? Do you need candles, ambient lighting, etc?
Mobius: I need 3 of every color m&m! (laughs) Just kidding. I love to be at home, especially this past year. I love having my own space, it helps me get in that uninhibited headspace. I also love using some lights to create a nice ambience.
GC: So you like being comfortable!
Mobius: Exactly! Lately, I’ve just been exploring and chasing a sound. Essentially, I’m picking through tools to work with. I don’t have a specific idea in that moment.
GC: As far as marketing, how has COVID changed the way you market yourself. Do you do anything differently now?
Mobius: The first part of COVID was rough. I was figuring things out. I started doing Twitch streams and that definitely helped me connect with other musicians, DJs and producers. The music scene on Twitch is growing and i’ve been tapping into it, like Kenny Beats streams. His stream is toxic, yet hilarious. (laughs)
GC: HIGHKEY toxic, but definitely hilarious. (laughs)
Mobius: Discord was another platform I explored, MixedbyAli, Knxwledge were great avenues to chat with people are share music, engage etc.
GC: To me, that is one of the best and most authentic ways to network! It’s very personal.
After hearing you talk about gaming, i’m curious about your goals for your music. For example, would you like to see your songs featured in games?
Mobius: It would be great! I’ve definitely become a bigger gamer again during the pandemic. I’d say that, either a movie or television show, just sync in general- it doesn’t have to be anything big. Really, my goals now are just collaborating with other people. I think one consistent thing I’ve heard about my music a lot is that it’s it’s got a very visual & cinematic element to it, and i’m trying to flesh that out more. Having visuals accompanying my music is definitely a focus of mine lately. I am looking into video production and animation, and it has been super interesting to learn that side.
GC: When you’re listening to something, you definitely have a visual in mind, so I find that super important. I love film and couldn’t picture it without music, and I think that works both ways.
Mobius: I also want to start producing with and for other artists. I find the process to be really enjoyable.
GC: What’s next for you? Do you have anything coming out soon?
Mobius: I’ve got a couple singles coming soon, and then i’m trying to come up with something on Twitch as well. I’d love to start doing some live shows again, so i’m keeping my eyes open for venues near me opening up. Bands are tough to maintain and organize, so i’m leaning more toward doing electronic music, I find that it’s really coming together, so i’m looking forward to doing those types of DJ sets.
