Kidd Kenn Claims His Space with “Problem Child”

With a contagious glow and a baby pink scenery, Chicago native rapper Kidd Kenn released his latest E.P titled “Problem Child” last Friday on June 11th. The E.P holds 6 of Kidd Kenn’s latest tracks, including “Good Day” and “Moves” featuring rapper Rico Nasty. “Problem Child” aims to present Kenn’s core self, proving him worthy of all his goals throughout the industry.

Dontrell Smith, professionally known as Kidd Kenn, is no stranger to the spotlight. From a very young age, Kenn has received an ecstatic response from the public eye with his prodigal freestyling. This later earned him a guest appearance on Kehlani’s San Francisco Pride set in 2018 as well as a feature on GLAAD’s 20 Under 20 list by Teen Vogue last year. Kenn also most recently released a makeup tutorial for Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty YouTube channel. Despite being only eighteen years old, Kenn has always stayed true to his career and knew that music is where he belonged.

Expressing his true self was never an issue for Kenn as he chooses to live every step of his career exuding pure confidence. Kidd Kenn envisions himself reaching new heights in the next few years from topping the charts to a potential cosmetics line. But while watching his dreams rise to reality, Kenn never lost his self-worth. Though his genre may appear dominated by straight, cisgender men, Kenn is aware he should never try too hard to claim his space in hip hop as a black, queer youth. For Kenn, what belongs to you is what belongs to you. The only thing it takes to claim your goals is to be unapologetically yourself.

“When I walk in the room, it’s all eyes on me. I don’t even have to try too hard to claim a spot that’s already mine”

Showing the world his true self is what Kidd Kenn plans to bring in “Problem Child,” and showing his core self is what he will do. “Problem Child” is a sign for black queer youth across the globe to pursue only what feels true to them. Kenn stresses that being yourself, staying consistent, and believing you are the best is what will help you succeed in a challenging world. It is certain that Kidd Kenn will become one of the hottest Gen Z artists to look out for this summer.
