NuRa enjoys writing and spoken word and finds music to be the perfect complement to her words.
Gulie Carrington: Thanks for meeting up! How did we get connected here today?
NuRa da Goddezz: I actually just started getting back into what I’ve been trying to do at the end of December, which is actually around the time I discovered Finessed Media. I am a person who wants peace for everyone, everywhere but that can’t happen without putting in any hard work. At 43, I am so grateful to be able to take a break and return to my craft without missing a beat. I have to credit the knowledge I was instilled with as a child to what I’ve become today- it comes out in my music and in my poems. I have a need to express that and reach people to make them smile or provoke them to feel or think. I’ve always wanted to be involved but be different; for example, in school I had the option to play sports in school, but I had more fun being the mascot!
GC: That is so interesting! Where does your artist name come from?
NRG: I got the name from my promoter, Rock in 2006. He is still around in Atlanta; he had a spoken word background just as I did. My original name was Rebma, Amber spelled backward, aka ‘my reflection’. His girlfriend at the time said “I have a name for you: NRG aka NuRa Goddezz” because it went with the whole vibe of Egyptian hieroglyphics. Ra is the sun. I’m trying to bring the light!
GC: I like that. I want to know how the internet and COVID have affected you as a creator, poet, writer, and artist.
NRG: It’s actually gotten me back into a creative space. I’ve learned so much in these 3 months, I’ve learned different apps for visuals. I just got active on IG in December and before that I was mostly using Facebook. It’s very enriching and has helped me grow. Baby steps. I had to learn how to sit down and make a plan, set a routine.
GC: You love poetry, but you also love music. How do the two play into your life?
NRG: Music can change your whole vibe. It can make you dance, help you heal, make you cry, think, visualize, etc. The two go hand in hand. There are no boundaries with poetry, no rules. It is so freeing to create and express myself however I want to and pairing it with music helps me tie it all together. I can do poetry without music, but I don’t feel it has the same impact.
GC: What’s next? What are you working on and where can we find your music?
NRG: I’ve been working on revamping my style and the way I deliver my messages! Right now, I am working on getting it distributed through TuneCore but it’s not there yet- for now I’m on YouTube, ReverbNation, SoundCloud and Facebook. I’m an author! My book, Thoughts of a Water bearer: Thinkin’ Randomly (Volume 1) is available on Amazon, Kindle and paperback. It is a collection of about 50 poems that I’ve released: mostly haikus. The second is one is in progress so look out for that! Audio book on the way as well, that is definitely one of my goals.
