Many of us watched Hannah Montana growing up and aspired to be a pop star just like her, this isn’t any different from Justy. She started writing music when she was about 12 years old, went through a period of being in bands, and once she hit college that was when she felt “I settled into my own self.”

For most, college is a time of growth and expansion, and through this period Justy re-evaluated what it meant for her to be a professional artist. Thankfully so, because we wouldn’t have songs like Expectations Remix (song of the summer in my eyes)!

The Brooklyn born, Staten Island raised singer, Justy, is a queer artist with a bright road ahead of her. Her debut EP, Soul Food, the Precede, sends the listener into a trance that reminds me of watching the sunset from my apartment window. It is not a lie that her music has a nostalgic vibe that makes you reminisce on your memories. She tells her own struggles and the ups and downs of relationships centered around the queer experience, making Justy is the perfect artist to listen to for your queer representation.

One of the best parts of interviewing Justy was her enthusiasm and honesty in conveying her emotions about music to me. It is clear that she is extremely passionate in what she does and strives to become a reckoning force in the music industry. What is her biggest advice as a queer poc independent artist?

From contemplating what her music should mean to performing in Brooklyn Pride, there seems to be no stop in sight! Justy is making waves in the music industry and making sure that queer representation is heard and here to stay. 

You never know, the person who is handing out flyers on the street just might be a future singer on the rise!
