Coming of Age with Gracie Abrams

Who is the bedroom pop mastermind behind the heartbreaking EP ‘minor’? Gracie Abrams, whose music career rocket launched during the pandemic, is ready to make you feel like the main character in a chick flick who is driving around their neighborhood at night crying because someone broke their heart. I had the opportunity to get to know Gracie Abrams' origins and what’s coming next for her thanks to her º1824 conference!

Gracie Abrams learned how to songwrite due to her mother encouraging her to journal at a young age.

“I can’t imagine myself, as a kid, just randomly falling into songwriting, had I not been journaling since before I could even read my handwriting back. It just felt so private… I felt so amped to have discovered this sacred space in my journal,” Abrams said.

From then, Abrams started recording music and uploading demos on SoundCloud when she was 13. Her first upload was actually a cover of one of Phoebe Bridgers’ songs.

“I recorded it on my laptop [and it was] straight from terrible, but it made me feel really fulfilled,” Abrams said.

Her earliest upload has been deleted, but here’s a clip of another Phoebe Bridgers song she’s covered in the past.

Fast forward to July of 2020 and Abrams has released her first EP ‘minor’. The EP came about from a tough breakup she went through and was her outlet. Just as her audience feels that it’s a coming of age collection, so does Abrams.

“‘minor’ was very much “coming of age” for myself and it was a project about a relationship and my relationship to somebody else. I think the music that I’ve been writing more recently has been, for sure, much more of a self-reflection about my relationship to myself,” Abrams said.

Her newest single ‘Feels Like’ is out now and was inspired by a train ride Abrams took from New York City to Connecticut with her best friend to see the movie ‘After’.

“The movie was an experience but the day was incredible. When I think about it I can remember exactly how cold it was and what we were wearing and what we were listening to. You know the day when you just feel like somebody is secretly filming you and you’re actually part of this weird simulation? It was one of those that had to be written about,” Abrams said.

Gracie Abrams will be going on a North American tour next year and she couldn’t be more excited!

“I’m so excited for touring in the spring...just knowing the music that they [the fans] haven’t heard yet. I just hope we’ll connect. Talking to them and seeing them in person and hugging them at the shows makes me want to never leave them,” Abrams said.

It’s clear that Abrams’ success is only going to continue to rise so hop on and join the journey of this rising star.
